Shuttered Venue Operator Grant Opens April 8th

This past Friday (3/19), the Small Business Administration (SBA) confirmed applications for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant will finally become available for affected business owners starting April 8th.

NIVA and IIVA are helping Indiana independent venues, comedy clubs, promoters and festivals get ready to apply for Shuttered Venue Operator Grants (SVOG.) Our #1 priority is making sure every business has the information necessary to determine eligibility, prepare and apply.

We are not able to provide advice relating to your venue or business eligibility, but we can point you to some very helpful resources for you to make that determination on your own.

Follow the steps below to get your business ready.

The Shuttered Venue Operators (SVO) Grant program was established by the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act, signed into law on December 27, 2020. The program includes $15 billion in grants to shuttered venues, to be administered by the SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance.

Eligible applicants may qualify for SVO Grants equal to 45% of their gross earned revenue, with the maximum amount available for a single grant award of $10 million. $2 billion is reserved for eligible applications with up to 50 full-time employees

Status Update (March 24)

Complete these steps, in order. We are updating this page each with as additional guidances becomes available from the SBA. Some of these have a longer lead time to process so be sure to start them immediately.

SBA is actively publishing updates on their site which can be found here.

  1. Review the SBA’s Shuttered Venue Operator Grant eligibility requirements, and the preliminary application checklist (as of 3/11).

  2. Register for the informational webinar hosted by the SBA to introduce the application process for potential eligible businesses on March 30th from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET.

  3. Complete the NEW NIVA membership form. You will receive a NIVA Member number within 24 hours. If you are an IIVA member, or plan to be, please send this number to JB or Karah to update your member profile. We recommend joining the IIVA, Indiana Independent Venue Alliance, which is focused on supporting our Indiana venues, festivals and promoters. We will continue providing ongoing support throughout the application process.

  4. Confirm your business has a D.U.N.S. number. If you need to acquire a D.U.N.S. number you can do so here. This process can take up to two weeks to receive your number. What is a D.U.N.S.? View NIVF help doc for more info. It has not yet been determined that this is a requirement, but early indications that you will need to have this.

  5. Sign up for a SAM (System for Award Management) account. This is the account used to issue government grants and contracts. You will need your D.U.N.S. number to complete this process. Review the new S.A.M. account setup guidelines. You will want to ensure you complete this process all to the end until you receive a CAGE#. We have been told the CAGE# will be an important asset when you apply. It may take up to a week to get your CAGE # after completion.

  6. Sign up for a Grants.gov account. You will need to have your SAM and CAGE# in order to set this up.

  7. Get your financials prepared. While we do not yet know what reports will be needed, getting basic P&L statements together for 2019 and 2020 will be a great start. We recommend working with the Indiana SBDC for help with financial and business advice. This is a great no-cost resources to help Indiana Small Businesses.

  8. Join the IIVA so you can gain access to our Slack channel and real-time communication with other venues navigating this opportunity (and many others.)

Click here to revisit the SVOG eligibility requirements for small business owners, and here for the preliminary application checklist. It’s a good idea to start gathering any supporting documents that will help demonstrate your loss / impact including:

  • Proof you charge admission to live events

  • Proof you pay artists

  • Floor plan of your venue

  • Proof 70% of your earned revenue is related to putting on live events

  • Proof you advertise your events to the public
